In the US city of Philadelphia, a man wearing a bulletproof vest opened fire, leaving five adults dead and two children injured.
The 40-year-old suspect in the attack was armed with an AR-15-style weapon, a handgun, a police scanner, and ammo. He is currently in arrest.
He has no known relationship to the victims, who the police reported ranged in age from 15 to 59.
On Monday, police were called to the Kingsessing neighbourhood in the southwest of the city.
Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw claims that when officers arrived, they did identify and locate some victims of gunshot wounds. As they gathered the casualties and prepared them for transfer to the hospital, they also heard several gunshots.
Officers then pursued the man on foot while gunfire erupted all around them, destroying parked cars and leaving shell shells all over the streets.
Police surrounded the man in an alleyway at around 20:40 local time (00:40 Tuesday GMT). Without further ado, he surrendered and was brought into arrest.
Jim Kenney, the mayor of Philadelphia, detailed a marauding attack by a gunman wearing a bulletproof vest and firing indiscriminately at a news conference on Tuesday.
According to Commissioner Outlaw, the “armed and armoured” man opened fire with his weapon at random, killing five people, including “children and babies,” out of seven shots.
Commissioner Outlaw continued, “There is no reason to think there are additional suspects.”
According to Ernest Ransom, a staff police inspector, the suspect fired at automobiles while donning a ski mask, including one being driven by a mother with young twins who both sustained injuries.
He claimed that the first person suspected to have died in the incident took several hours to be found because they were at home alone when they were shot.
Lashyd Merritt, age 20, Dymir Stanton, age 29, Ralph Moralis, age 59, Joseph Wamah Jr., age 31, and Daujan Brown, age 15, were among the fatalities.
According to Commissioner Outlaw, if officers hadn’t attended to the injured and engaged the perpetrator head-on, there might have been more victims.
An area covering eight blocks and covered in dozens of shot casings has subsequently been cordoned off by investigators.
Police are currently looking for a potential motive, and the culprit has not yet been identified.
A second person was also detained. According to the commissioner, they are thought to have obtained a gun and “returned fire in the direction of the shooter.”
It is unclear if that individual is related to the shooter.
On the day before Independence Day, a shooting in Baltimore, Maryland, claimed the lives of two individuals and left 28 others injured, including almost half of them children.
Multiple individuals who opened fire during an annual neighbourhood event are still being sought after by police.
And late on Monday, after a local 4th of July festival, there was a shooting in Fort Worth, Texas that left at least three people dead and eight others injured.
President Joe Biden stated that more needed to be done “across America to address the epidemic of gun violence that is tearing our communities apart” in the wake of the shootings.
