The prelims produced a ton of action and excitement before switching to the main event, where the action reached a new level, as UFC 290 delivered from beginning to end. This was a fantastic night inside the Octagon, with a quick finish, a lightweight war, a new contender entering the middleweight division, a fight of the year clash that produced a new champion, and a champion proving he’s on another level.

– On Saturday night, Esteban Ribovics and Kamuela Kirk engaged in a highly exciting back-and-forth to open UFC 290, setting the Fight of the Night standard high right out of the gate.

Ribovics was promptly thrown on the canvas by Kirk, who had complete control of the opening frame. Kirk continued to hold dominant positions until the horn. Kirk was repeatedly hit with powerful blows by Ribovics as they traded foot-to-foot in the second’s latter half. As Kirk weakened in the third, Ribovics began to gain the upper hand. He used takedowns and clinches to punish “The Jawaiian” and seal the victory.

The Dana White’s Contender Series graduate won his first UFC fight, improving his record to 12-1 after losing his debut in March. Kirk lost, dropping his record to 1-2 in the Octagon and 11-6 overall.
At 0:17 in the first round, Jesus Aguilar defeats Shannon Ross via right hand knockout.
The bout ended instantly when Jesus Aguilar tapped Shannon Ross on the side of the head with his right hand. Ross was instantly knocked out, and to his credit, Aguilar knew it and refrained from landing any additional blows.

What a knockout for Aguilar, who triumphs in the dramatic walk-off match after losing in his debut.

Terrence Mitchell is defeated by Cameron Saaiman via TKO in Round 1 at 3:10.
Cameron Saaiman defeated Terrence Mitchell easily to earn his third consecutive UFC victory as he keeps moving swiftly up the bantamweight ranks.

The 22-year-old South African started out strong, going after the UFC rookie with a high-elbow guillotine before turning the tables on him. Saaiman dragged Mitchell to the floor, climbed on his back, and pounded out the finish after beating him with knees in the clinch along the fence.

UFC Career

With his third straight victory on a pay-per-view fight card in Las Vegas, the young fighter improved to 9-0 overall after a pair of strong performances to start his UFC career.

Although still inexperienced, Vitor Petrino has won back-to-back fights inside the Octagon to solidify his status as a legitimate contender in the light heavyweight division moving ahead.

The Polish fighter Marcin Prachnio challenged the 25-year-old Brazilian to a veteran test, and he succeeded. The Brazilian landed the bigger blows of the two in the opening round before switching to grappling in the second and third, latching onto an arm-triangle choke to force the tap. When Petrino placed Prachnio on the canvas in the third round, it was evidently over as he systematically advanced to the finish. Petrino wasn’t troubled by much going his way.

Petrino is an exceptional physical specimen who demonstrated he is incredibly coachable and had a ton of upside in getting to 9-0 overall with his second consecutive UFC victory. He has little experience and still has a lot to learn.

Alonzo Menifield defeated Jimmy Crute via submission in the second round of their rematch from earlier in the year, demonstrating his progression in the UFC light heavyweight division.

The Dallas powerhouse cautiously selected his places in the opening round, landing the more powerful strikes all the while avoiding being forced to the ground. During the second round, both competitors were cautious on their feet. Crute went deep with a double leg, but Menifield immediately rose to his feet and grabbed hold of his neck, twisting the Australian to the canvas where he pulled the tap.

With the victory, Menifield extends his winning streak to four fights and improves his recent seven-fight record to 5-1-1 as he moves closer to the Top 15. It’ll be intriguing to watch what comes after this one for this explosive athlete who keeps getting better.

At strawweight, Denise Gomes is a problem!

The Dana White’s Contender Series graduate from Brazil ignited Yazmin Jauregui with a crisp right hand in the opening exchange, and the Dana White’s prospect kept firing from there, unleashing a barrage of unanswered blows that caused the stoppage.

Lot of room to develop

The Parana Vale Tudo product has already posted back-to-back finishes after making her short-notice debut, displaying a different kind of power than what is typically seen in the 115-pound weight class. Gomes, who is only 23 years old, is already making an impression and has a lot of room to develop.

Tatsuro Taira is still unbeaten, but the Japanese prodigy was put to the test for the first time in his UFC career.

As soon as he forced the fight to the ground against Edgar Chairez, the 23-year-old took control of the first two rounds, but he had to work hard to get there and was unable to do any significant harm. In the third round, everything continued as before until Chairez caught a guillotine choke, adjusted his hold, and mounted, only for the final horn to ring.
